Around the Pond: 5000 km on the North Sea Cycle Route

What is this?

This is a travelogue of my bicycle trip of most of the North Sea Cycle Route.

The North Sea Cycle Route is a 6000 km long cycle route through Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Scotland, England, Belgium and the Netherlands. You can find the link to its official web site in my Links page.

I set out to complete the entire 6000 km in June to August 2008. Though I only managed 5000 km in this time it was a great experience. While under way I published a travel blog in german (link also on my link page). This site contains the english version, with more pictures and maps.

How is this site organized?

I made a single page for each of the 93 days of my journey - even for days where nothing much happened. Each page has a link to the previous and following day. You can start with the Tour Overview or pick a travel day from the menu at the top of the page.

The maps on each travel page show a track I recorded on my GPS during the trip. The mape are regular google maps, which means you can zoom in, switch to satellite mode etc. The map on the pages of rest days generally show only the are where I staid.

Why did I do this?

I made the trip because I love traveling, I love cycling, and I needed a long time out from my job.

I made this web site because I helps me remember what was one of the best times of my life, and because I wanted to try out some stuff with JavaScript and the google maps API. I also wanted to publish a nice travelogue. I loved to read travelogues and travel blogs in the month before the trip, dreaming of the journey.
